Soquel Alum, Milwaukee Brewer Casey McGehee Keeps Giants in First Place

Even if inadvertently, McGehee threw a bone to his home state on Wednesday night.

Having lost three games in a row since their 15-3 slaughter of the Tigers on Saturday, the San Francisco Giants entered Wednesday's game against the Padres just one game ahead of Arizona for first place in the NL West.

A fourth straight loss, paired with a win by the Diamondbacks, would have pushed the Giants into a two-way tie atop the division.

But thanks to Santa Cruz native and alum Casey McGehee, the third baseman on the Milwaukee Brewers, not only did the Giants slip no further, they actually doubled their division lead to two games.

How, you ask, did a Milwaukee Brewer accomplish this feat, when the Giants were playing San Diego?

Here's the answer: McGehee's Milwaukee Brewers were playing the Arizona Diamondbacks. Down 1-0 in the bottom of the seventh inning, McGehee hit a pinch hit three-run home run to deep center, making the score 3-1, where it would stand for the rest of the contest.

The loss for the D'Backs, paired with the Giants' extra-inning win (complete with two Nate Schierholtz bombs to right field), allowed San Francisco to augment its division lead.

The home run was great news for McGehee, too, who after leading Milwaukee in RBI last year, has struggled all season, hitting just .222 through 80 games.

Casey McGehee, Soquel and all of Giants Nation, thank you.
