Red Sox Milestone Has Capitola History

The Red Sox and Phillies relived a piece of Capitola lore on Sunday.

Fun fact of the day: In Sunday's game between the Philadelphia Phillies and Boston Red Sox, Mike Aviles hit a home run to lead off the game for the second day in a row.

The last Red Sox player to do that was a man named Harry Hooper in 1913. According to the Sacramento Bee, after Hooper retired from baseball, he campaigned for Franklin Roosevelt and then became the postmater of Capitola from 1933 until 1971.

According to the Capitola Historical Museum, Hooper's parents moved to Capitola in 1907. He later had a house in the Village and was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in August of 1971.

100 years ago, Hooper was a starting outfielder for the Boston team that won the World Series. Call me crazy, but I'm willing to bet Capitola has not since claimed a postmaster with a World Series ring.
