Big Wins for Friend, Leopold, School Props, Term Limits and Cigarette Tax

Only Bruce McPherson didn't make 50 percent in his County Supervisor race.

Santa Cruz County voters overwhelmingly swept Democrats into local offices and showed they aren't afraid to put their money where their schools are.

County Supervisor candidates John Leopold and Zach Friend won't face November run-offs for their jobs, garnering 70 and 57 percent of the vote. Republican Bruce McPherson, however, fell just under the 50 percent required to avoid a second election.

Schools were big winners in Scotts Valley and Santa Cruz, where voters overhwhelmingly supported previously raised parcel taxes to keep services. Tobacco companies lost a measure to increase taxes on their products to support cancer research.
