Sandoval Sexual Assault Investigation Continues; Accuser is 21-Year-Old Local

The woman accusing the Giants all-star of sexual assault is a 21-year-old from Santa Cruz County.

Sheriff's Office detectives continue to investigate the allegations at an Aptos resort last week. Sheriff's Deputy April Skalland told Patch Monday that the "alleged victim is a 21-year-old from Santa Cruz County."

Still, no charges have been filed, the District Attorney confirmed.

"They're still investigating this. They are collecting evidence and speaking to witnesses," Skalland said. "Most of the investigation should be wrapped up by the end of the week, but other forensic evidence can take a while to get back."

District Attorney Bob Lee told Patch that his office had not received the case, though attorneys from his staff have been working closely with the Sheriff's Office on the investigation.

"Once we get all the forensics back, then we'll refer it to the DA's Office," Skalland said. "They're going to stay hands off until we're done with it."

Generally, in cases such as this, when charges have not even been filed, authorities refrain from notifying the public. However, most cases don't involve high-profile atheltes.

"We're letting everyone know because he's a public figure and everybody's going to be asking," Skalland said. "We don't want to seem like we're witholding anything."

Before the alleged assault at Seascape Beach Resort in Aptos, Sandoval was seen posing for photos with fans at Motiv, a bar on Pacific Avenue in Santa Cruz.

"Women and men were coming up to him all night, taking pictures and talking to him," Motiv Manager Isaac Cook told the Santa Cruz Sentinel. "He was very lucid and friendly. We didn't have any problems."

Sandoval is currently on the disabled list after breaking the hamate bone in his left hand. He is expected back with the Giants within the next two weeks.
