Major Accident Injures Aptos High Student near School

Traffic was severely backed up and a fence at the school was damaged.

An Aptos High School student was hit head-on as she turned into the high school property early Tuesday morning.

The student, 16, was headed west on Freedom Boulevard at 6:32 a.m., waiting in the turn lane at Mariner Way when an Audi coming the other way accelerated through a red light and smashed into the new driver.

"A chain link fence on school property and a street light were both damaged in the collision," Officer Sarah Jackson said. "Both vehicles sustained major damage and were towed from the scene."

The two Audi occupants were trapped inside the car and had to be extricated. One was taken by ambulance to Valley Medical Center over the hill and the other was transported to a local hospital. Both the driver, 21, from Watsonville, and the passenger, 22, from Aromas, suffered what CHP called "major" injuries.

Multiple medical helicopters declined to come to the scene due to weather, Aptos/La Selva Fire Division Chief Todd Skrabak said.

The student was treated at the scene and taken to the hospital by her parents to treat minor injuries.

Traffic was closed in both directions on Freedom Boulevard for about 30 minutes, Officer Jackson said. It was later open one way, and then cleared completely.

Luis Fernando Corona, the driver, is being cited for driving without a license in his possession and reckless driving, both misdemeanors.
