Capitola-Soquel Unemployment Well Below State Average

Joblessness is less of an issue locally than it is statewide.

Since the recession hit in 2008, jobs have been eliminated across all sectors of the workforce.

According to The Bay Citizen, even the booming technology industry has suffered over the last four years.

However, they also report that unemployment has fallen each of the last four months in California, down to 11.3 percent. It topped out at 12.5 percent in December of 2010.

In Capitola-Soquel, the recession hasn't gone unnoticed, but its effect on unemployment has been less drastic than in other parts of the state. In 2007, according to The Bay Citizen, the unemployment rate in Capitola was just 3.2 percent. In November, 2011, it stood at 6 percent. Similarly, Soquel jumped from 4.4 percent in 2007 to a present day rate of 8 percent.

The same cannot be said for all of Santa Cruz County though. Watsonville sits on the opposite end of the spectrum in relation to the rest of the state, with unemployment having risen from 13.1 to 22.2 percent since 2007.
