UPDATE: Durbin Concert Back On, Despite Elimination

Santa Cruz's James Durbin officially placed fourth in this year's 'American Idol' competition.

UPDATE: FRIDAY, 1:34 p.m. Santa Cruz Mayor Ryan Coonerty said Friday afternoon that James Durbin will play a concert at Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk as scheduled Saturday.

"It took a lot of begging and pleading to get American Idol to make an exception to their rule of only letting the top three performers give live concerts," said Coonerty.

The concert will be at 5 p.m., as it had been planned. Stay tuned to Patch for full coverage of the event.

Update 11:47 p.m.: Santa Cruz Patch reports a final decision on Durbin Day has not yet been brought down, according to Mayor Coonerty. More to come on Friday. 

Original Report: James Durbin, the American Idol finalist from Santa Cruz, has been eliminated from contention, officially placing fourth in the show's 10th season.

Durbin, who battles Tourette's and Asperger's syndrome, was a favorite of the competition from day one, but could not outlast competitors Scotty McCreery, Haley Reinhart and Lauren Alaina.

It now appears  will be canceled. That includes Durbin's appearance at the .

Local fans will still have the chance to see Durbin perform live, though, as he will come to San Jose, Oakland and Sacramento on the Idols Live 2011 Summer Tour in July.
