Trapped Mountain Lion Tranquilized and Removed

A mountain lion that was trapped for hours in the Branciforte Creek aqueduct near downtown Santa Cruz was tranquilized and rescued this afternoon, police said.

The cat was first seen around 7 a.m. Later in the morning, it became trapped in the aqueduct near Water Street and May Avenue, police said. Wildlife experts were able to tranquilize the animal and safely remove it from the area. Police cleared the scene just before 1 p.m.

The rescue crew was comprised of personnel from the University of California at Santa Cruz Puma Project and other organizations.

The state Department of Fish and Wildlife also responded to the situation, police said.

No one was injured during the hours-long rescue effort, police said.
