On this date (Oct. 7) in 1922, local farmers were prepping for the Santa Cruz County Fair. Below is an article from the Pacific Rural Press, Vol. 104, No. 15, courtesy of the California Digital Newspaper Collection, that gives us a glimpse of what our town and county were like 89 years ago today.

Santa Cruz After More Livestock

Santa Cruz county is making arrangements for a larger livestock exhibition at the County Fair at Santa Cruz on October 11-16 than has ever before been gathered together in the county. The livestock committee is composed of J. A. Brown of Capitola, chairman; H. P. Struve, Roy Silvear, Tom Kilfoyle, E. L. Bishop, W. J. McGrath, John E. Porter, Frank Sillimah, M. B. Wilder and Charles R. Thorburn. These men are determined to have people who own farms in the county realize the natural advantages the county affords for raising livestock. So far, these have been largely overlooked.

The Santa Cruz County Fair now has a board of directors, but there is no trace of a livestock committee. There is, however, a junior livestock committee that is active through the fair, which has been held at its current Watsonville location since 1941.
