Man Gunned Down in Soquel Hills

A man in his 20s was fatally shot early Thursday morning.

Update 5:21 p.m.: The victim of Thursday's shooting has been identified as Jeff Smith of Soquel. .

Update 12:05 p.m.: The man killed Thursday in front of a Soquel Hills home was in his late 20s, Sheriff's Deputy Steve Carney said. Although dispatchers called for a medical helicopter after the gunshot was reported, the victim's body was still at the scene at 11:30 a.m.

The residence where Thursday's homicide occurred, 383 Nicasio way, was under the longtime ownership of Frank Sloan, records show. According to a Legacy.com obituary, Sloan died in early March, 2011 and was survived by his wife Suzanne Fox Sloan and two daughters, Amanda Fox Sloan-Smith and Mahalia Marion Sloan. Sloan's son-in-law is listed as Jeff Smith.

Carney said the victim either lived at the residence or was "closely associated with the residence."

At 3:12 a.m., the victim, who Carney said was in his 20s, was shot outside of a house on Nicasio Way, which is seven miles north of Soquel Drive. 

"They secured the scene and are collecting evidence right now," Carney said. "It appears to be an isolated incident. There's not a threat to the community of someone running around shooting people."

There is no suspect information at this point, but Carney said witnesses are being interviewed. The shooting is not believed to be gang-related.
