More Local Volunteers Head to Colorado to Aid Fire Relief

The local chapter of the American Red Cross has sent eight more volunteers.

For the second time in as many weeks, the Santa Cruz County Red Cross has announced that it is sending a in relief efforts related to the raging fires in that state.

With the seven sent this week, the total going to help from Santa Cruz County is now at 10. 

Joining the three already in the Rocky Mountain region are , Park Cuseo of Aptos, Leonard Davis of Live Oak, Alan Mayfield of Scotts Valley, Susan Curry, Megan Darrough and Margaret Cunningham, all of Santa Cruz.

According to the Red Cross, more than 83,000 acres have been burned in Colorado this month and 32,000 people have been evacuated from their homes.

"Thousands have been impacted by these disasters and the Red Cross is giving them a safe place to stay, food to eat and a shoulder to lean on," said Charley Shimanski, senior vice president, Red Cross Disaster Services. "We are expanding our efforts to help the growing number of people affected by the fires in the west."
