Capitola Yard Sales Raise Funds for Charities

It was a beautiful mostly sunny Saturday or the annual city-wide garage sale weekend.

Yard sales speckled the roadsides of Capitola, from the Jewel Box to the neighborhoods around New Brighton Beach on Saturday morning, in the city's annual city-wide garage sale weekend.

While some families said they'd be donating to Goodwill or a cause yet-to-be-decided, many families had specific charities picked out, including the The American Heart Association and the AIDS Life Cycle ride, which happens the first week of June and is a 545 mile bike ride from San Francisco to Los Angeles.

Members of the Capitola Village Residents Assocation had a yard sale to raise money for the Human Care Alliance Charities.

Local artist Maya Clemes was having a yard sale because she and her husband are moving to Portland at the end of the month. It was her first yard sale.

"It's a great exercise, realizing if you haven't used it for five years, then you might as well give it away," said Clemes. "Of course then for artists, you never know when you are going to use something so you keep it around."

Inside her house, Clemes has her art on display: ink paintings, encaustics, and porcelain sculptures she made over 40 years ago. Many of them have already sold over the past few days but there are many works of art left, and she will be selling them again tomorrow. Check out the photos of her art for the address of her art sale!
