Wharf to Wharf Gets First Ever Three-Time Winner

Kenyan runner Shadrack Kosgei places first, local high school students Mitch Moriarty and Vanessa Fraser place in top spots.

The 40th annual Wharf to Wharf Race spanned Santa Cruz to Capitola Sunday morning and once again it was Shadrack Kosgei, 27, of Kenya, that crossed the finish line first overall. His time was 27 minutes, 20 seconds, making him the first three-time winner in the six mile race.

As for the ladies, Risper Gesabwa, 23, also of Kenya, was the first woman to cross the finish line.

Local runners to place in the top spots were Mitch Moriarty from Aptos High School and Vanessa Fraser from Scotts Valley High.

Many of the people that ran in the race have participated for many years, yet, there’s always room for newbies and a lot of them enjoyed the Wharf to Wharf for their first time.

Mayra Cervantes, 24, is from Gilroy and this was her first race in a beach setting.

“The vibe here and the energy is very different and upbeat,” said Cervantes. “It’s very encouraging with all the locals and everybody out on their driveways with the live music, very original.”

As for Cecilia Willer, 51, it was 10 years ago that she strapped on her running shoes but she hasn’t forgotten the best parts about the Wharf to Wharf.

“The bands were really good,” said Willer. “And you can see the ocean the whole time. I loved it.”
