Upcoming Summer Fitness Events

Join active and fit locals during the month of August at one of the many fun runs, ocean swims, duathlons or triathlons in the Santa Cruz area.

During the month of August, you won’t have to travel far to participate in a challenging yet enjoyable fitness event. From an epic trail run in the redwoods to a swim in the choppy cold waters of the Monterey Bay, there is almost something for everyone—kids included.

With summer officially half way over, you’d better get serious with yourself and take a closer look at your physical health as well as your fitness routine. Perhaps you’ve toyed with the idea of doing a fun run, beginner’s triathlon, or maybe even going for a swim in the ocean, but have not had the self-confidence to do it. Well now is your chance to sign up for a challenging event in the Santa Cruz area. Don’t let the fall season sneak up on you without accomplishing what you have always wanted to achieve. There is no better time than the present, right?

Below you will find a list of five local events you can choose from. No babysitter, no problem. Some of these events allow you to participate as a whole family—kids included!

Salinas Valley Half Marathon (Aug. 6)

The second annual Salinas Valley Half Marathon (13.1 miles) begins at the historic Soledad Mission and passes fields of verdant row crops and vineyards before crossing an idyllic finish line among the vines at Pessagno Winery. With a generous time limit of four hours, even walkers can participate in this event.

UCSC Cross Country Challenge (Aug. 11)

Sponsored by the Santa Cruz Track Club, this 4-mile USA Track and Field Cross Country Challenge will take place on the gorgeous UCSC campus overlooking the scenic Monterey Bay. You don’t have to be a college student to participate in this race as it is open to people of all ages and abilities.

Tri Santa Cruz Multi Sport Weekend (Aug. 13 & 14)

Brought to you by Finish Line Productions, this fun-filled weekend of events offers family races (where kids can race with a parent), relay teams, an international distance triathlon, a sprint triathlon, a duathlon, and new this year—aquabike races. Paratriathlon and physically challenged divisions are also available!

Race Thru the Redwoods 10K Trail Run and Kids Mile (Aug. 21)

The Felton Business Association presents the 43rdannual Race Thru the Redwoods 10K (6.2 miles) Trail Run, and Kids Mile Fun Run. The runs take place on the scenic single track trails of Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park in Felton. Whether or not you and your family regularly participate in an exercise routine does not matter. Race organizers encourage everyone to join the fun and get on the right track to health.

Dirt Inspires Women Half Marathon (Aug. 28)

The Dirt Inspires Women Trail Half Marathon (13.1 miles) takes place at The Forest of Nisene Marks State Park in Aptos. This women’s only race, which starts and ends at serene Aptos Park, is run on dirt fire roads and single track trails. Sorry guys, no racing this time around, but volunteers are always welcome and needed.
