Free Youth Indoor Soccer League Kicks Off Monday Night

This season, kids are aiming for both reading and soccer goals.

The Live Oak Family Resource Center, in partnership with the Sheriff’s Activity League and the Live Oak School District, will kick off the fourth annual free Futsal indoor soccer league for more than 250 local kids on Monday evening.

The soccer league, held at Shoreline Middle School, 855 17th Ave., has its first session from 5-9:30 p.m. Monday.

What makes this year unique is that kids are not only keeping their eyes on the ball, but as well on the pages they are reading from books donated by community residents. The kids’ collaborative goal is to have read for 15,000 minutes by the end of the season.

“Like last year, the books will be flying off the table,” one mom said in a prepared statement released by the Sheriff's Office.

Parents and players will volunteer Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday evenings outside of the gymnasium at Shoreline Middle School to staff the reading table.

Jr. Giants, another free sports program offered to Live Oak youth, will take up the reading program on Saturdays with contributions and other program support by community partners.

More community involvement is still needed, however, and donations of children’s books in both English and Spanish can be dropped off at the LOFRC (1740 17th Ave., Santa Cruz).
