STAR Test Results Released; County Schools Show Inconsistencies

Santa Cruz County high schools ran the gamut from atrocious to above average in the 2011 STAR results.

Schools across Santa Cruz County are officially beginning their 2011-2012 academic year this week. The new calendar brings the 2011 STAR results with it.

STAR (California Standardized Testing and Reporting) measures the academic achievement of students throughout the state. The test results are used as to help schools direct attention to areas that might need improvement.

According to the California Department of Education, 4.7 million students took the test in 2011, and math as well as language arts scores were "the highest...since the program's inception in 2003."

Scores are divided by five categories: advanced, proficient, basic, below basic and far below basic. The state's goal is for every student to fall into the proficient or advanced category. That, however, is still far from reality.

Among the seven major Santa Cruz County High Schools (Santa Cruz, Harbor, Soquel, Scotts Valley, Aptos, Watsonville and Pajaro Valley), 40.96 percent of students achieved a proficient or advanced score. Scotts Valley High School led the way at 57.36 percent and .

Across the seven schools, the student population on average was broken down as shown below.

  • Advanced: 17.30 percent
  • Proficient: 23.66 percent
  • Basic: 27.38 percent
  • Below Basic: 17.18 percent
  • Far Below Basic: 11.41 percent
