Soquel High School Club Holding Fundraiser Saturday for Spanish Study Trip

Diversity Club wants to fund raise for $24,000 trip to occur in spring break of 2012.

To fund a Spanish class trip to Costa Rica, the school’s Diversity Club will be holding a yard sale this Saturday.

The fundraiser will take place from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. in the student parking lot at 401 Old San Jose Road. It aims to partially or completely cut costs for some of the 12 students going on a 10-day Advanced Placement Spanish planned for Spring Break 2012.

“We want to study Spanish and be engaged with the culture,” said Diversity Club Co-Founder and yard sale organizer Rochelle Yellin, a junior. “There are many students who cannot go unless they get full funding.”

Yellin is still accepting donation items for the sale. So far, she said, it will spotlight a lot of “very good quality clothing,” bicycles and a desk. As the trip will cost $2,000 per person, Yellin does not expect to fully cover costs, but hopes to come as close as possible.

“Anything we get will be good,” Yellin said.

The Diversity Club was founded this academic year to promote awareness of other cultures, which it has done through meetings and posters around campus. This marks its first big event, Yellin said.
