Mid-County Students Beat State in Exit Exam Results

Tenth graders from Soquel and Aptos High School bested the state average pass rate.

Each year, the State of California mandates that public schools administer the California High School Exit Exam to tenth graders, which is meant to show statewide competency in math, reading and writing skills.

If a high school sophomore fails the test, they are given up to seven additional tries before graduation to pass. According to results released Wednesday by the California Department of Education, 84 percent of sophomores passed the test in the 2011-2012 school year, and 95 of all students passed by the time they finished their senior year. The 95 percent mark shows a sixth straight year of improvement.

At Soquel High and Aptos High, surpassed the state average. Cumulatively, 87 percent of students passed the math portion, while an impressive 90 percent passed the English section. Aptos students tested consistently slightly better than Soquel students, especially in math, where 95 percent of Aptos tenth graders passed.
