Early Election Results: Measure S Fails

It appears that there will not be a new property tax in the Soquel Union Elementary School District.

If election results stand the way they are being reported late Tuesday night, there will be no new funding for the Soquel Union Elementary School District.

According to the Santa Cruz County Election Department, Measure S, which needs 66.67 percent of the vote to pass, is just shy of doing so.

At 8:01 p.m., the department reported the following results:

Total Votes Percent Yes 4,054 60.77% No 2,617 39.23% Total 6,671 100%

There were reportedly still 100 ballots to be counted late Monday night, but even 100 Yes votes would not make the measure hit the necessary two-thirds passing mark.

But nothing is official until the county declares all votes counted.

Measure S would have added a $90 parcel tax to homeowners in the school district with the money being used to hire teachers, reduce class size, support libraries, art and music classes.

The measure had unanimous support from the Capitola City Council as well as State Senator Bill Monning.
