Benicia High to Gradually Become Closed Campus

The Benicia Unified School Board met Feb. 21 to hear a proposal for a closed campus.

Benicia High School will slowly become a closed campus during school hours.

Currently all Benicia High students have the ability to leave campus during lunch, except for freshman, and according to the Times Herald, the closed campus change would be gradual. Next year, only juniors and seniors would be able to leave campus and the following year only seniors, the Times Herald reports.

In a recent Patch poll, we asked readers if they thought the school should have a closed campus and 61 percent of voters said yes.

Commenter Karen LaRiviere wrote that she thinks the campus should be closed, in part because of accidents during lunch time near the school.

“There have been 2 serious car accidents in the last year. Are the restaurants going to pay medical or worse, funeral expenses of the kid killed racing back from their restaurant? No. Kids are in school to learn, not plan their lunch destination every day. …,” she wrote.

Another commenter disagreed.

“One of the best teachers in life is experience and accountability for one's own actions. I see the kids at many eating places during lunchtime and for the most part they are courteous, enjoy their break from the rigors of class and not behaving in an irresponsible way. Each student has the responsibility to pursue lunch off campus in a safe and sane way; I think they do a pretty good job,” the commenter wrote.

What do you think? Do you agree with the decision? Tell us in the comment section below.

@ BHS student you have to come at me better than that . At least " the racist" puts up a good banter once in a while . The financial ramifications of this decision are 10 fold. And since that is the only thing the school district and " some" care about . We will be looking at the financial impact this has on the community. The Benicia Police " facts" were mid stated by a prior poster . The BPD is no " busier " at the student lunch hour than they are any other time of day . Secondly the "87% misstatement" needs to be clarified. From the local schools contacted , most have a closed campus policy. Yet are unable to enforce it due to " the legality" of the policy . So, do your homework. Investigate for yourself and you may learn something. The School Board should RESIGN . Regarding this issue. The Principal may or may not be here in 2 years , we shall see regarding that revolving door.

I don't ever recall seeing you at any of the many meetings over the last 6 years where community members, students, teachers, board members, neighbors and the Benicia Police were present with printed reports of overwhelming "calls for service" during an 18 month period between the hours of 12:30 and 1:30 having to deal with Benicia High School students. The neighbors in the area have been asking for years to have something done so that kids aren't dealing drugs or smoking pot in front of their homes. 23 (Benicia, Napa High, Vintage w/ parent permission) of 26 local high schools in Napa, Solano, Contra Costa, Alameda counties contacted several years ago all had closed campuses. More have closed their campuses since then. I don't know where you get the idea that this is against the law. Most schools closed their campuses when the DMV changed the driving laws to prohibit newly licensed drivers from being able to take other kids in their cars for 12 months, but you probably disregard this law too as being too restrictive of "your rights." Make some calls, check it out, nothing that is being proposed is against the law in any way at all. As for the financial ramifications to local businesses, many of the kids are driving to Pinole, Pleasant Hill or Vallejo. There are alot of adults who stay away from places in town because of the kids and will most likely return and make up for the missing students. So which place is yours?

Good job Karen!! It's true students drive to wingstop, in and out, and Panda Express. Most students actual go to McDonalds or Burger King which aren't mom and pop shops and aren't going to go out of business because of $50 worth of lost revenue. So your argument is invalid and this is coming from a high school student who goes off to lunch. If I couldn't I would adjust. It's not a matter of life or death.

What is a Benicia HS student doing on their " phone" at 1106 am . Should they not be in class ? Or are they in violation of another school regulation ? First of all I have not seen any reports of " drug use , dealing, etc". If the kids are dealing drugs call the Police. File charges and bring them to the judge and jury. The fact remains this is wrong . The school should not be " locked up" .. That's it . That's all.
