Ten Capitola Businesses Ditch Plastic Bags

Even without a city ordinance, these businesses are pledging to help the local environmental movement.

Multiple businesses in Capitola have voluntarily decided to ban the distribution of plastic bags at the check-out counter just in time for Earth Day on April 22.

Recently, the County of Santa Cruz . The City of Capitola has prepared a draft ordinance similar to the county’s ban, but in light of a threatened lawsuit by the Save the Plastic Bag Coalition, the city council decided to delay a decision until some of the existing lawsuits have been settled.

“I could not have been happier than when we banned the plastic in our stores," she said. "Being in business near the beach, it just seemed like the right thing to do.”

Deciding not to wait for an official plastic bag ban, several Capitola businesses have all voluntarily stopped distributing plastic bags. The first 50 customers at these businesses will receive a free re-usable bag on Earth Day.

“Capitola has always been forward-thinking with regard to environmental issues," Mayor Mike Termini said. "We applaud all the businesses, especially the national chains, for stepping forward to do the right thing. This proves you do not always have to pass laws to create change.”
