POLL: Skate Park for Capitola?

After all the controversy, can it be solved by building a skate park in Capitola?

Skateboarding is and has been illegal in Capitola Village for years. The law was largely inconsequential for a long time, with the exception of feeding the teenage angst already rampant among the group that it targets.

That all changed in early July when a skateboarder flew down Cliff Drive toward the Village, . 

The accident led to on skateboarding in Capitola as well as increased fines for violators.

Skaters insist that the problem would largely be solved if a venue existed in the city limits specifically for their sport, and some city officials agree.

"I personally feel we have an obligation to the community to provide this recreational opportunity," Mayor Dennis Norton told the Santa Cruz Sentinel

The City of Capitola is so deep in its own pockets though from the that funding a skate park is likely out of the question for the time being. According to the Santa Cruz Sentinel, however, "Norton said he has heard of interest from some private donors, but had no specifics." 

There are currently skate parks in Scotts Valley, Santa Cruz and Watsonville.
