City Council Considering Ban on New Gun Dealers, Putting New Rules on Tobacco Sellers

The proposed gun control law would limit the number of public firearms dealers that can do business in Capitola and ban gun shows.

The Capitola City Council is set to limit the number of retail gun dealers who can sell weapons in the city but the proposed law won’t affect the number of private dealers.

Currently, there are three Federal Firearms License holders in Capitola, Big 5 Sporting Goods, Outdoor World and a private citizen, according to a list of licensees provided by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms.

According to City Manager Jamie Goldstein the proposed “urgency ordinance” wouldn’t affect the private citizen, only public sellers of firearms like Big 5 and Outdoor World.   Goldstein went on to say the council will likely make the urgency ordinance a permanent law at the next scheduled city council meeting.

Besides limiting the number of gun dealers the law will also ban gun shows in the city.

The city council is also scheduled to enact a city ordinance that will affect Capitola tobacco sellers.  Among other things the law requires tobacco retailers to check the ID of anyone attempting to buy tobacco products and bans smoking at all public events.
