Capitola Debates Fate of Four-Acre Lot, Town's First Skate Park, at City Council Meeting Tonight

Talk of Capitola's first skate park will culminate tonight as the Capitola City Council will discuss the future of the four-acre plot of land fronting Highway 1 on the town's eastern edge.

Since 2003, the plot of land known as McGregor Drive property has sat empty and unused other than intermittently being rented for construction staging. This year, however, the City Council decided to make it a priority when establishing their budget principles. While the staff will be recommending the development of a hotel, other options include continuing to rent it out as a construction site or using the space for recreational use such as a skate-park, dog-park or bike pump track. Jordan Austin, manager of Boardroom skate shop, thinks the city could even build a half-pipe instead of a permanent skate shop, saving them time and money. Staff, however, believe the site's peripheral location within Capitola and the lack of parking and pedestrian and bicycle access make a hotel the only realistic option.

The Capitola City Council will weigh these options, inviting public comment, at 7 p.m. tonight in City Hall, 420 Capitola Ave.
