Capitola City Elections: Who's In, Who's Out

There will be two empty seats on the Capitola City Council in November.

The official filing period for candidates seeking election in Capitola began Monday morning. Candidates for city offices have until Aug. 10 to turn in nomination papers.

Here's what we know so far:

  • Tuesday, Nov. 6 is the big day. Of course, we'll elect a new president that day, but our local issues will also be decided.
  • In Capitola, there will be two open seats on the city council with Dennis Norton and Kirby Nicol's terms expiring. Jacques Bertrand's city treasurer seat is also open.
  • Having served two consecutive terms, Nicol cannot run again this year.
  • Norton, however, plans to run again, according to Mayor Mike Termini.
  • City Clerk Su Sneddon said that no one has pulled or filed candidacy papers yet.
  • According to Termini, Ed Botorff, a retired firefighter who serves on the Traffic and Parking Commission, plans to run for one of the open council seats.
