Undercover Deputies Threatened in Live Oak

Jose Romero was arrested after charging sheriff's deputies with a rock.

Santa Cruz Sheriff's deputies arrested Jose Romero, 19, in Live Oak on Wednesday after he rushed two deputies with a large rock in his hand.

According to the Sheriff's Office, two deputies were driving in an undercover vehicle on East Cliff Drive and 16th Avenue at 3:40 p.m., when they passed Romero on the street. He watched the car drive by, grabbed a rock and chased after the vehicle until the deputies stopped and jumped out donning vests labeled with yellow "Sheriff" lettering.

"Romero dropped the rock and ran the opposite direction. The undercover deputies chased Romero and caught him a short distance away," according to an official statement from the Sheriff's Office.

A search of Romero unvocered an eight-inch fixed blade as well as heroin.

He was arrested for assault witha deadly weapon, possession of a controlled substance, carrying a concealed fixed-blade knife and gang enhancement.
