Soquel Repeat Offender Could Face Three Years in State Prison

After a vehicular manslaughter and DUI conviction over the last four years, Donovan Hicks Barclay will be sentenced on April 12, 2012.

Donovan Hicks Barlay, 21, of Soquel, is no stranger to the courtroom.

In 2007, as a 17-year-old, he flipped his 1995 Saab, killing his cousins Shane Barlcay, 22, and Tyler Barclay, 17. He was charged with vehicular manslaughter, but since he was tried as a juvenile, further details of that case are confidential.

On Tuesday, Barclay pled no contest to Felony Driving Under the Influence in relation to that accident, and also admitted that his blood alcohol content was above .15 percent, according to District Attorney Bob Lee.

Because of the vehicular manslaughter charge, the 2010 DUI was elevated to a felony.

"We are pleased that the Court upheld the use of his prior vehicular manslaughter adjudication," Prosecutor Michael McKinney said, "as it holds him appropriately accountable for driving under the influence after he has seen the consequences firsthand."

Barclay will be sentenced on April 12, 2012 and faces a maximum of three years in state prison.
