A wanted fugitive found in possession of heroin, methamphetamine and almost $4,000 in cash was arrested Saturday in Capitola by a Santa Cruz County sheriff's deputy.

At about 6:40 p.m. a member of the Santa Cruz County Anti-Crime Team Gang Task Force was on patrol in the 1800 block of 41st Avenue when he recognized a wanted fugitive, identified as transient Paul Garcia, seated in a vehicle.

According to the sheriff's office, Garcia had fled from members of the Narcotics and Gang Task Force earlier in the week.

When the deputy attempted to contact Garcia, he fled on foot through a nearby shopping center. The fugitive discarded items as he ran and threw controlled substances onto the rooftop of a business, according to deputies.

Garcia was apprehended and deputies located about half an ounce of heroin, two ounces of methamphetamine and three to four thousand dollars in cash, deputies said.

Garcia was arrested for his outstanding warrant, possession of controlled substances for sales, destruction of evidence and for resisting arrest, according to sheriff's deputies. Garcia is a suspected active gang participant, deputies said.
