PHOTOS: Santa Cruz Police Procession, Memorial

Thousands of supporters came out to line the streets of Santa Cruz and attend the San Jose HP Pavilion Police Memorial Service.

The memorial proceedings for Elizabeth Butler and Butch Baker, the two Santa Cruz police officers killed last week, began March 7 with a processional through the streets of Santa Cruz.

Police Departments from all over the state participated in the processional, which began at 8:45 a.m. and made its way to San Jose for the memorial ceremony.

By the time the procession reached San Jose, thousands patiently waited outside HP Pavilion to share their memories and respect.

Grateful for the photos!
I was thinking: if our Police Officers were paid competitively, or got benefits that include a "housing costs differential", their children wouldn't maybe need community support to get the schooling their families want for them, would they? I hope the whole memorial and day goes peacefully for our SCPD.

Im happy to have been there to document this... Please do not copy or save my images... They are copyright & full rights reserved go to LockedOn Photography 2013. Thank you, and may the Fallen Officers rest in peace.

Not wanting people to use the photos you shared on a public website seems rather selfish. Do you really think they are good enough to sell? Average at best.
Sheila Sanchez March 8, 2013 at 10:23 pm
Jeff Larson, respect ... LockedOn Photography has a right to share its beautiful images with whoever it wishes to share them with. If you're not one of the lucky ones, move on, my humble suggestion.

...and Jeff Larson, I asked that people please do not copy & save them, sharing the images has already been done. I really find no need for insult towards another member (myself) in the community at such a time... I find your tone really rude during a time when our community has been coming together with love and it makes me sad me simply asking of courtesy of respect upsets you to the point of passing negative judgement and posting it online... Im sorry you feel that way.

Ah big deal I saved the images and shared them the very first day.
LockedOn Photograpy March 9, 2013 at 03:35 pm
Hope you didn't crop my watermark as that is copyright infringement, I shared these images with intention of being respectfully courtesy to our community for those who werent able to make it - I'm surely surprised by the lack Of respect within this thread in such an instance of violence. Very sad.

For ur info I was shareing them how they were im not stupid u should have some respect instead of assume u no some people share photos who like photos ill be shure were im not getting photos from not my bussnis

No assumption was made... I feel some of you don't understand my position as an artist & business owner. I am finished with this battle thread, might be the last time I share images or even try to project something to people of SC the backlash isn't worth it, and it has only made my heart hurt more for the community of Santa Cruz while officers have fallen - people continue to have the desire to attack others on their photo album thread, regardless of the points to be made against who, I come from a respectful stand point & continue to be that person. I find it outrageous that a simple courtesy is asked of those who view the images and the negativity begins to flow because someone has something negative about it.

"...the negativity begins to flow because someone has something negative about it."
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Regarding the rude and negative comments, I was going to say welcome to the Watsonville Patch but I see this is going back and forth on the Santa Cruz & Capitola Patch. Guess people everywhere are pretty much all the same after all....Too bad about the lack of respect regarding copyright though.

I am one of those people who was not able to go to the memorial. I appreciate the videos and all the pictures! Thank you. It brought tears to my eyes to see the our community and all the officers from different parts of California and the country who came to pay their respects, condolences amd most of all show support. Very powerful! Again thank you for all your pictures and the great videos.

The Soquel Cemetery looked wonderful with all of the flags flying for Memorial Day. Thank you toRead More all of the folks who did this!
Soquel Deb June 7, 2013 at 08:11 am
On my own, I did a much smaller version at the Santa Cruz cemetery by Dominican - planted flags forRead More a few 'doughboys' from WWI and Navy and Army guys from WWII. My dad was a career Naval aviator and flew reconaissance in the Vietnam conflict. Next year, I'll join you in the Soquel cemetery, what a great idea to do this as a community effort!

Hi, Nigel - I agree with you that there needs to be more understanding between everyone. I grew upRead More boating (lake and ocean) in this area and was taught the 'rules of the road'. As long as everyone abides by the rules and keeps each other safe, I don't care what one rides. I agree that the announcer should have been more aware not only with expressing his personal views but he should have had the experience to see that you needed to take a certain path and were not there trying to catch waves. Ignorance on his part. I kneeboard and body surf (yes, I can stand-up surf, also) and have had my share of run-ins over the years. I don't surf the major breaks anymore unless its really big, which thins out all but the most skilled. These days I try and find a little break away from the crowds (not an easy task) and am happy with a few little peelers here and there.

Is it me or does there seem to be an excessive amount of us vs them mentality and worse, anger inRead More Santa Cruz these days? I went to a community event not too long ago and it was clearly present amongst a number of the people there, they definitely had a "this is our town not yours" vibe going on. It reminded me of the old Valley go home mentality that rears its head sometimes. I know your post was about sharing the ocean but in a more general sense that easy going chill attitude I love about Santa Cruz seems to be getting lost in too much anger and quite frankly a "Me-ism" and egocenteredness that's a big turnoff.

During the SUP/Kayak contest a few weeks ago there were a group of us below the end of the contestRead More event area and after we all (Stand-up and prone paddlers) went to far into the area the organizers just pointed out that we need to stay below the judges booth. After a bit we of course all drifted further up and then someone on land announced that it is a misdemeanor to interfere with a contest. Finally, they sent a guy out to mind us and let us know to not drift above him. All very pleasant and cordial. Except for a few surfers thought the rules did not apply to them and constantly snaked in and paddled up to grab waves. Made everyone our there grabbing a few leftover waves looking like prima donnas. Eventually those incorrigibles left and after the contest ended it was a great afternoon of surfing for everyone.

A big fat 0!!!!! I couldn't stand the Rolling Stones in the 60's and I really can't stand them now.Read More They should have retired a very long time ago.
Cathy P. April 4, 2013 at 05:54 pm
When I was a teenager you were either a Beatles fan or a Stones fan, you couldn't be both ;) Let'sRead More just say I didn't become a Stones fan until my later years. That being said, I wouldn't pay any amount to see them in concert: too loud, drunk & drugged audience, and the lines are too long to the bathroom! I am glad to see they are still around even though they all are on Medicare now - rofl.

I would pay a big fat zero...
