Crime & Safety

Dozens of National Night Out events were held throughout the county on Tuesday.

Sheriff Phil Wowak greeted a crowd packed with Live Oak families Tuesday night, and then he sentenced some of his deputies to the dunk tank on an unsummery night that almost felt cold enough to form ice.

A red helicopter that helps the department buzzed the crowd and took off in front of wide-eyed watchers. CSI Sgt. Shon Leonetti explained why the televised versions of his work, in which police solve crimes in an hour with four commercials, are ridiculous.

There was a rescue jet ski, firefighters and plenty of families who took part in the second annual Night Out Against Crime celebration.
