Man Wanted by US Marshals Arrested in Soquel Hills

The chase ended when the driver drove through fresh asphalt and got stuck.

A car chase that started in Capitola led to a high-speed pursuit and the eventual arrest of a Bakersfield man wanted by federal authorities for weapons violations, Capitola police reported Friday.

The incident unfolded on July 12 (a week before police released the information). Sgt. Mark Gonzalez apologized for the delay.

"We had a pursuit where CHP took over," Gonzalez explained.

A Capitola police officer tried to pull over a vehicle on Monterey Avenue near Capitola Avenue around noon on July 12, a Thursday. Instead, the vehicle sped away toward Soquel Village and up Old San Jose Road, according to police.

That's when the California Highway Patrol joined the chase, Gonzalez reported.

Road construction hampered the driver's attempt to escape. He drove over freshly laid asphalt and got stuck, according to police. Hugo Castro Norato, 27, was arrested and his two passengers were detained, Gonzalez reported.

Norato was wanted by the US Marshals Office in Virginia for a weapons violation. He's on federal probation and is a gang member, authorities said.
