UPDATED: Man Commits Suicide in City Hall Parking Lot

A man suffered a self-inflicted shot to the head on Capitola Avenue Monday evening.

A man has died after being transported from Capitola City Hall to the Dominican Hospital emergency room at 8:07 p.m. Monday following an "apparent suicide by self-inflicted gunshot wound," Capitola police Sgt. Cliff Sloma has told Capitola-Soquel Patch. 

Central Fire District and Capitola police responders arrived shortly after shots were first reported by residents in Capitola Village at 7:51 p.m.

The injured man, who Central Fire spokesman Mike DeMars referred to as "elderly," was found lying in the parking lot of City Hall at 400 Capitola Ave. across the street from the Central Fire District station.

Emergency personnel began administering advanced life support upon arrival, DeMars said, and the man was then taken to the hospital by ambulance after a medical helicopter was canceled. 

The lot is roped off for the time being, and the firearm used in the incident was recovered at the scene.

Capitola police Chief Mike Card told the Santa Cruz Sentinel that the man did leave a note, although he did not disclose its contents. 

The event is still under investigation, Sloma said, with very little explanatory details at this point. 

This incident comes after the of a woman on the Cliff Drive Turnout just above Capitola Village.
