--By Bay City News

A resident was displaced when a fire badly damaged his home early this morning in the Opal Cliffs area of unincorporated Santa Cruz County near Capitola, a fire spokesman said.

Firefighters from the Central Fire Protection District were dispatched at 12:07 a.m. today to a house fire at 3855 Floral Court and saw flames coming from one of the rooms, district spokesman Mike DeMars said.

Neighbors in the area said that the resident of the single family home was not at home when fire broke out, DeMars said.

Firefighters attacked the fire from inside and outside the house and were able to contain the flames to a single room, a window and the eves of the structure, DeMars said.

The heat of the flames destroyed a kayak stored outside the house and the rest of the house was damaged from heat and smoke, DeMars said.

Later during the fire, firefighters located the resident standing outside with his neighbors watching, DeMars said.

The male resident explained that he had been building a desk in the home Thursday evening and had left to meet with friends when neighbors called telling him that smoke and flames were coming out of a room in his home.

No one was injured in the blaze but the home was declared uninhabitable, DeMars said.
