Fire at Capitola Mall Evacuates Macy's

A storeroom burned on Wednesday morning.

Update 10:37 a.m.:

The cause of the fire is still being investigated, Capitola Police Chief Mike Card told Capitola-Soquel Patch. It does not appear as if arson or any other crime is to blame for the incident, he said.

There were as many as 14 engines on the scene at one point, according to Card, with Santa Cruz Fire and Scotts Valley Fire assisting.

Update 10:21 a.m.: Several fire engines are still on the premises as firefighters work to sweep gallons of water out of the store. 

Employees have congregated in the parking lot, many having arrived for work after the incident occurred, as it was before the store opened.

Original Report: A fire broke out in a storeroom at at the Capitola Mall at 8:26 Wednesday morning, according to emergency radio traffic. 

Witnesses reported seeing smoke pouring from the doors.

The fire was on the second floor of the store, KION Central Coast News reported. There were no injuries, according to the TV station.

According to the Santa Cruz Sentinel, about 30 employees were evacuated and the fire has been extinguished, but there is smoke and water damage. 

The mall typically opens at 10 a.m. on weekdays.
