Aptos Teen Sneaks Drugs into Jail Cell

Deputy April Skalland said the female inmate likely wasn't strip searched during booking because another female was not present to perform the task.

A 16-year-old Aptos girl made a mess of her room at the Santa Cruz County Juvenile Hall in Felton on Saturday.

The girl was arrested on March 13, and when officers searched her room on March 16, they found marijuana, a glass pipe, cigarettes, rolling papers and matches all wrapped in "feminine products," Deputy April Skalland said.

Often when a female comes into the facility, if there are no female employees there to do a full strip search, it is put off until later. Skalland posited that this was likely the case when the girl was booked, allowing her to sneak the contraband past officers.

The teenager had possession of a controlled substance in jail added to her list of criminal charges. She will soon appear in juvenile court, Skalland said.
