UPDATE: Hwy. 1 Crash Victim Identified

Joshua McCoid died on the highway near Aptos just after midnight on Sunday, March 19.

Update 12:05 p.m.: The man who died early Sunday on Highway 1 has been identified as Joshua McCoid, 35, of Aromas, according to Sheriff's Deputy April Skalland. He was previously reported to be from Aptos.

The circumstances leading up to the crash are not known. 

Original Report: A 35-year-old man died early Sunday morning when his vehicle left a state Highway 1 on-ramp in Aptos and crashed into a tree, the California Highway Patrol said.

The man, an Aptos resident, was driving southbound on the on-ramp from State Park Drive at around 12:40 a.m. when he lost control and the 2004 Volkswagen Touareg went off the east edge of the roadway, the CHP said.

He suffered fatal injuries in the crash, CHP officials said.

The man was not wearing a seat belt and the crash is under investigation, according to the CHP.

The on-ramp was closed for approximately three hours.
