VOTE: Should Dogs Be Allowed on Capitola Beach?

Would you like to see more pets in the sand in 2012?

Last week when , he said he would like to revisit the idea of allowing dogs on Capitola Beach.

His vision for the reworked regulation would be to allow dogs on the beach until 10 a.m., when locals and tourists start making their way to the sand. Pets would then no longer be allowed past the seawall from late morning throughout the day.

Aside from just timing, there are other issues to be worked out as well, including on-leash versus off-leash regulations and the need for waste bag stations.

Termini is sure there is demand for a dog beach in Capitola, as he said, "there are as many dogs in Capitola as there are registered voters," but finding support for the idea in city hall could be a completely different obstacle.

So what do you think? Would you like to be able to take your dog to Capitola beach? If so, do you think there should be timing or leash restrictions? Vote in the poll below and tell us what you think in the comments!

I personally would like to see off-leash mornings with on-leash afternoons. What restrictions would you want in place if dogs were allowed on the beach?

Because Capitola Beach is so small, dogs should be allowed on-leash only. Early mornings and early evenings are ideal times. Anyone interested in knowing how other municipalities handle dogs on beaches can go to http://parks.ca.gov/?page_id=21305. The site gives an excellent overview of what beaches allow dogs with and without restrictions on the use of leashes.

Thanks, that's a great resource.

As a dog owner, I would love to be able to take my dog to the beaches at any time of day. However, due to issues with unleashed dogs on other beaches, I won't even take him if they are allowed. Unfortunately, irresponsible dog owners give the rest of us bad names. My dog doesn't like to be accosted by unleashed dogs that "just want to play" and he is ruined for the rest of the day. If everyone would follow the rules from the get-go, there wouldn't be any problems with dogs being anywhere... but alas, some have to ruin it for everyone.

Why not let dogs on the beach west of the pier? At low tide owners could take their dogs toward Privates without disturbing many beach goers.
