Letter to the Editor: Surfers Should Share the Water

One reader had a very unpleasant experience kayaking past the Women on Waves Longboard Surf Fest over the weekend.

The following letter was submitted by Nigel Belton, regarding an unpleasant encounter with the Women on Waves Longboard Surf Fest on April 13:

I was paddling my kayak in close to shore today due to very strong and potentially dangerous off shore winds. I passed the surf contest being held at the Capitola Beach on the way to Pleasure Point from New Brighton Beach.

On my return I encountered a kelp bed and had to turn in towards the beach as my fin was snagging the kelp. Imagine my surprise when the commentator behind the microphone starting insulting me by calling me Sue and making other misogynistic comments.

I had no intention of getting close to the lineup and was no where near its proximity. He then went on to make insulting comments about paddle boarders. I am at a loss at to why he thinks a kayak is a paddle board. I would like to point out that the commentator's attitude and comments were insulting and very immature.

I understand that this event is a fundraiser, but would ask that the organizers of the event have someone who is respectful and well informed to host future events. The boorish behavior demonstrated by the commentator is symptomatic of an elitist and arrogant attitude shown by some surfers to others who also enjoy the ocean.

He set a very poor example for young people at this event and also managed to show disrespect to all the girls and women present by inferring that the use of their gender is an insult.

What do you think of Nigel's experience? Especially shocking given that the event was Women on Waves? Maybe a big misunderstanding? Tell us in the comments.
