Dogs are Pet Sitting and Teaching Kids to Read!

Pet Sitting Exclusive: Dogs in the Library!

In libraries and schools here in Santa Cruz County and all over the country, volunteers and their therapy dogs are helping kids improve their reading skills and gain self-confidence in the process. The dogs are in essence pet sitting the kids!

The Tales to Tails Program brings certified therapy dogs into schools and libraries. Volunteer teams of one dog and its handler are paired with one child who needs to improve his or her reading skills. The child chooses which book he wants to read, sits on the floor (at dog level), and reads to the dog. During the 20 minute session each child chooses how much reading and how much petting to do.

Dogs are Good Listeners

The dogs are attentive listeners and are completely non-judgmental. They don’t criticize or pressure the kids to rush. The kids become more enthusiastic about reading and show actually show significant improvement in their reading skills, vocabulary and comprehension, often after only one session!
