With the publishing of this Sentinel artice Thursday and after reading the confused and misinformed comments, I thought it would be appropriate to start a conversation here on Patch.
The money for the 41st Avenue Art Project is from developer fees which we require them to pay in an effort to beautify Capitola. They build and do business here so they should participate in the enhancement of our community. alone has paid $140,000 into our art fund.

Yes, the schools need money. Yes, there are people going hungry. Perhaps all resources should be diverted to theses critical needs, but we try to achieve a balance. Did we try to enlist a Santa Cruz artist? Yes, only one applied and made the final cut. Did we stay as local as California? Yes and we were successful. Should we disqualify an artist because they do not live here? Certainly not.
