Frozen thoughts thawed!

Thinking about past 4th of July holidays when my dad made homemade ice cream has made me realize he was having fun with me on those outings! My dad was a pretty serious guy and didn't laugh much. He worked long hours, had a big commute, so I didn't see him much during the week. By the time he got home, it was close to my bedtime.

But on the holiday in July, he had fun. When he "accidentally" hit the button for block ice, instead of a bag, he was investing 50 cents worth of fun for me. I don't think it was a mistake now at all. When he asked me, so perplexed, "What shall we do with this big block of ice?" he was teasing me. When he put a plastic tablecloth down on the car seat and let me sit on the ice on the way home, he was letting me have fun too!  Sooooo cold, but our weather was sooooo hot, it felt good!

And since none of this ice ever melted on the way home--at least not the bagged ice, I think he was spoofing me that the Ice House was far away. He must have taken the long way to get there, just to add to the anticipation, OR maybe to spend more father/daughter time with me. My mom always stayed at home, making up the ingredients to pour into the ice cream canister, ready for our return.

My dad's birthday was close to April Fool's Day, it was the following day, so no wonder he had a hidden sense of humor and liked to tease sometimes--about once a year on 4th of July!!  Funny I never thought of that before!

4th of July has always been my favorite holiday and this year was no different. Living in Capitola is the best. I enjoyed eating at some of the great places we have have, and discovered an ice cream shop that has delicious lactose free chocolate sorbet.  I took the long way to drive to it and enjoyed the magnificent scenery on my drive. Learned that from my dad, I guess.

Happy Summer making happy memories, everyone!
