Here's the winning recipe from the Apple Pie Baking Contest earlier this month at the Santa Cruz County Fair:
“Best of Show” 2013 Apple Pie Baking Contest By Maggie Kaunich, Watsonville
Crust 2 ½ cups flour 1 cup butter chilled 1 tsp.salt 2 to 4 Tbs. ice water
Filling 6-8 apples (tart) 1cup sugar Pinch of salt ½ tsp. cinnamon
Directions Mix crust ingredients with pastry blender, add water, one Tbs. at a time until dough just holds together. Chill for one hour. Roll out on floured surface. Line pie pan, fill with apples. Bake at 350° until apples are soft, about one hour.
