Watsonville Police Arrest Capitola Woman for Elder Abuse

Morgan Rebecca Stuart obtained a new vehicle and over $100K from a 78-year-old Watsonville woman.

On Wednesday, Watsonville police arrested Capitola resident Morgan Rebecca Stuart on charges of elder abuse for financial gain.

During a year-long investigation, Watsonville police learned that Stuart, 53, had obtained a brand new vehicle and $101,884.00 in cash from a 78-year-old Watsonville resident.

Stuart acknowledged receipt of the vehicle and funds, but insisted that the vehicle and money were gifted to her to help her promote her hospitality business, and to pay medical expenses, according to Watsonville police.

The victim and her family allege that Stuart befriended and manipulated the victim, and later took financial advantage of their relationship.

The investigation revealed that Stuart was incarcerated for one year in Federal Prison for credit card fraud in the early 1990s, and had embezzlement charges filed against her in 1994 by a former employer in Campbell.

Watsonville police encourage anyone with information about the case to call Police Detective Bailey at 768-3358 or the Watsonville Police Anonymous Tip line at 768-3544.

Victimizing an elderly person and violating a position of trust as a friend has got to be the lowest of the low. Once again, I hope there is such thing as Karma!

Morgan Stuart is NOT the owner of Five Star Catering. Internet rumors can really hurt a small business. Please be responsible in what you post!
Lori December 1, 2012 at 01:02 pm
I can confirm that Morgan Stuart is not the owner of Five Star Catering however, did work with them while working with Pajaro Dunes Company. I unfortunately had the experience of working with her and seeing first hand, her manipulative personality. I was a loyal employee, working for Pajaro Dunes Company for years and she was hired (I was told) as a consultant but later worked her way into the company as I was pushed out. I am sad for this woman who was victimized but not at all surprised that Ms. Stuart is accused.

This makes a lot of sense to me. There were a lot of weird unexplained instances for me when I was planning my wedding in 2011 using vendors Morgan worked for. I had to cancel a credit card provided to Morgan for venue deposit due to fraudulent activity. We caught it early so it wasn't a huge amount and didn't pursue finding who charged those items. There were checks that I had given for payments that "went missing" and I had to cancel and many more "odd" instances like those. I cant confirm that it was this woman but I can say she was in the middle of all the issues that arose and I never felt comfortable with her.
I feel so awful for this victimized elderly woman and it also leads me to wonder how many more people who were planning weddings or other events and were taken advantage of too. So sad
Lori December 1, 2012 at 01:39 pm
Terra, I can only imagine the number of credit cards, checks & cash she had access to working at both companies. I hope this particular family gets justice for what has happened to them.

I know it's human nature to speculate on everything that could be related to this case. Trust me...as the owner of Five Star Catering, I'm going thru the same process. I personally have spoken to the investigating officer that reviewed all bank records and he assured me that he had seen no evidence of fraudulent credit card activity, bank deposits, etc. I encourage anyone who has concerns about transactions with Five Star Catering to call me personally at 831-728-3090. Again, please remember that internet rumors can be damaging to everyone, including the 50 some employees that rely on their job at Five Star. The allegations against Morgan stem from a personal relationship that she had with this woman; a thorough investigation has been conducted by local law enforement looking at all angles and there has been no hint of inproprieties related to any of her business activities.

MORGAN, who has been the face of five star catering may not be the owner but has run the business for years and manipulate and stolen, I hardly think that when this news gets out there will be a bride within a hundred miles that will have anything to do with this business or the vendors she refers!

Too all of you...While reading these messages, the words "rush to judgement" came to mind. I know the circumstances behind the charges leveled at Morgan. I am one of her many friends. I have listened carefully to her side of the story and grilled her with pointed questions. There is nothing in her answers that would change my opinion of her. In many cases, the circumstances behind the alleged elder abuse have been inaccurately reported. To those of you who are so willing to assassinated Morgan's character, I ask you to be fair. Until you know the facts, you simply don't know and therefore you should keep silent.

Law Enforcement cannot just "charge" someone with a crime. They are held to a higher standard on all levels and accusations are not easily assigned. There is enough evidence against Morgan that the District Attorneys Office felt confident to formally charge her. So no one just conjered up an accusation. The public will most likely not ever be privy to the facts that you refer to and only if a conviction is made. I find it interesting that an earlier comment was made regarding no evidence suggesting her conduct was only personal and not business related. How do you know? Has there been a thorough investigation as well into her business practices. Personal refers to the type of person someone is and if shes the type of person to take advantage of someone who is vulnerable, why would she differentiate that from personal and professional?
Sam Hipkins December 2, 2012 at 06:10 pm
Are you saying that no one has ever been falsely accused of a crime and that District Attorneys are infallible?
She December 2, 2012 at 06:24 pm
She is very lucky to have a friend like you
mad at scums December 2, 2012 at 08:23 pm

mad at scums December 2, 2012 at 08:39 pm
i wonder sam when you were questioning morgan did you ask her what she did with all this money? what was her answer? taking a elder women her life savings. what sob story did she give the elder women to give this amount of money? no body is just going to hand over this amount of money so she took advantage of the elder women

He: THAT would be a crime in itself. id you not READ WHAT FIVESTAR JUST WROTE, RE: INTERNET RUMORS? WHAT'S WRONG WITH YOU ANYWAY?
AS for me, I will do whatever I can to help aid FiveStar and its 50+ employees to retain their business AND gain more. None of the employees are accused of anything. Neither is the owner of FiveStar accused of any wrongdoing. If you have nothing good to say, you can always bite your tongue.

The speed with which we so often pretend or attempt to be judge, jury, and executioner is sad, to say the least.

Just a clarification...5 Star catering is owned by Laura Vasquez not Morgan Rebecca Stuart

I work with the victims family member. This woman is indeed pond scum. She should be put out in the woods with bears and smothered with honey. After the bears are done with her, the ants can take the remains and feed themselves for the winter.

On my own, I did a much smaller version at the Santa Cruz cemetery by Dominican - planted flags forRead More a few 'doughboys' from WWI and Navy and Army guys from WWII. My dad was a career Naval aviator and flew reconaissance in the Vietnam conflict. Next year, I'll join you in the Soquel cemetery, what a great idea to do this as a community effort!

Hi, Nigel - I agree with you that there needs to be more understanding between everyone. I grew upRead More boating (lake and ocean) in this area and was taught the 'rules of the road'. As long as everyone abides by the rules and keeps each other safe, I don't care what one rides. I agree that the announcer should have been more aware not only with expressing his personal views but he should have had the experience to see that you needed to take a certain path and were not there trying to catch waves. Ignorance on his part. I kneeboard and body surf (yes, I can stand-up surf, also) and have had my share of run-ins over the years. I don't surf the major breaks anymore unless its really big, which thins out all but the most skilled. These days I try and find a little break away from the crowds (not an easy task) and am happy with a few little peelers here and there.

Is it me or does there seem to be an excessive amount of us vs them mentality and worse, anger inRead More Santa Cruz these days? I went to a community event not too long ago and it was clearly present amongst a number of the people there, they definitely had a "this is our town not yours" vibe going on. It reminded me of the old Valley go home mentality that rears its head sometimes. I know your post was about sharing the ocean but in a more general sense that easy going chill attitude I love about Santa Cruz seems to be getting lost in too much anger and quite frankly a "Me-ism" and egocenteredness that's a big turnoff.

During the SUP/Kayak contest a few weeks ago there were a group of us below the end of the contestRead More event area and after we all (Stand-up and prone paddlers) went to far into the area the organizers just pointed out that we need to stay below the judges booth. After a bit we of course all drifted further up and then someone on land announced that it is a misdemeanor to interfere with a contest. Finally, they sent a guy out to mind us and let us know to not drift above him. All very pleasant and cordial. Except for a few surfers thought the rules did not apply to them and constantly snaked in and paddled up to grab waves. Made everyone our there grabbing a few leftover waves looking like prima donnas. Eventually those incorrigibles left and after the contest ended it was a great afternoon of surfing for everyone.

A big fat 0!!!!! I couldn't stand the Rolling Stones in the 60's and I really can't stand them now.Read More They should have retired a very long time ago.

When I was a teenager you were either a Beatles fan or a Stones fan, you couldn't be both ;) Let'sRead More just say I didn't become a Stones fan until my later years. That being said, I wouldn't pay any amount to see them in concert: too loud, drunk & drugged audience, and the lines are too long to the bathroom! I am glad to see they are still around even though they all are on Medicare now - rofl.
