View Finder: Capitola Freight and Salvage

A walk through Capitola's yard of salvaged goods, that would have ended up in the landfill if it wasn't for them.

Conveniently located on your way to on 38th avenue, Capitola Freight and Salvage is your one-stop supplier of reusable goods.

Their inventory includes light fixtures, miles of tiles and other building materials, doors, windows, porcelain sinks and toilets, tires, and much, much more. It's one of those places that gives the phrase "searching for a diamond in the rough" its meaning. You may have to search, but there are many gems hidden among the rubble. Antique woodstoves, old iron claw feet for your tub and oil lamps from the 1930s are just a few such gems.

The yard is set up in well-organized corridors of porcelain parts, a warehouse-sized shed of doors and windows, and areas of miscellaneous patio treasures among the palm and banana tree plants sold by Marvin Gardens.

Some of the windows and building materials are brand new too, and Kerry of Capitola Freight and Salvage said they check out prices at hardware stores and price a little bit lower even for their new stock.

The yard is stocked by local contractors, local manufacturers and locals who are remodeling their homes and choose to donate their used house parts.

"We believe in recycling everything possible to keep these things from filling up the landfills," the company states on their website.

In times like these, a perusal of salvaged materials before buying new is a commendable way to reduce your carbon footprint.

Capitola Freight and Salvage is open seven days a week, from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m., weather permitting. If they are open while it's raining there is no sales tax!

These snap shots were taken on a walk through the yard on a recent morning, just a few minutes after they opened for the day.
