Near-Record Heat Hits Capitola

Wednesday, Sept. 28, was one for the books.

If you stepped outside Wednesday even once, you noticed one thing for sure: It was very hot.

We had a cold summer in Santa Cruz County. According to the National Weather Service, the average high temperature of 62.1 degrees from June to September marked the 28th coldest summer of the last 117 years. 

Fall, however, has been a completely different story so far. Since the new season began on Friday, the average high temperature has been 76 degrees in Capitola-Soquel, with a near-record high on Wednesday.

The heat, according to Accuweather, peaked Wednesday at 93 degrees with a "RealFeel" of 97 degrees. Historically, the average high for Sept. 28 in Capitola-Soquel has been 76 degrees.

The all-time record for the date was actually reached in 2010, when thermometers nearly reached triple digits, peaking at 99.

Hopefully you've been able to enjoy the heat wave while it has lasted, because it will be gone soon enough. By Sunday, the forecast has local highs reaching an apex of 67, with showers on the way next week.
