Capitola News, 114 Years Ago Today: Fire Destroys Apples

Thousands of crops were lost on this day in 1897.

On this date (Nov. 12) in 1897, the Sacramento Daily Union reported on a Capitola fire that destroyed thousands of crops in its Vol. 94, No. 84. 

The Union stayed in circulation until 1994, when it could no longer compete with the Sacramento Bee. See the news brief in full below.

The Packing House of L.G. Sresovich was burned at 1:15; loss, 11,000 boxes apples and fourteen tons prunes. It was the largest in the county, and the third packing house to burn here within two weeks. The fire was of incendiary origin.
