Capitola Garage Sale Turns 10 This Saturday

About 100 locals will be holding sales all at the same time over the weekend. A map of the sales will be available Thursday.

This Saturday will mark the 10th year of the Capitola Spring Garage Sale, in which dozens of residents all over town will sell their items in front of their homes.

The event was originally the brainchild of Administrative Services Director Lisa Murphy, with the driving idea to recycle unwanted items to other people rather than putting them in a landfill.

It has grown every year since its inception with mass public participation.

“It started off with probably 45 or 50 people, and now people call me and email me asking if I’m going to organize it again,” Murphy told Patch in 2011. “They expect it now. Now it’s become a big event.”

This year, Murphy said about 100 participants will have garage sales as part of the bigger event.

Considering the goldmines that can pop up at just one garage sale, the wealth of jackpot items can be huge at the Capitola citywide sale.

“You will hit a ton of fabulous garage sales,” Murphy said two years ago. “I’ve scored myself. One time I bought a surfboard from a kid. There are always really good bikes. One year a lady was selling an Annieglass collection.”

The Capitola Spring Garage Sale is an all-day event. A map of all the sales happening around town will be available on the city website on Thursday.
