Capitola Target Open For Business

People stormed into the new Target store inside the Capitola Mall on Tuesday night.

A large, excited crowd stood patiently outside the entrance of the new Target store inside the Capitola Mall on Tuesday and they were more than eager to see what was inside the remodeled two-story building.

But before the guests were allowed to roam around and shop, Capitola Mayor Mike Termini and the store’s Team Leader Valerie Custodio made it official with an induction speech and the ribbon cutting that was fittingly white with the Target logo on it.

Target also announced some generous donations, including $1,000 to the Capitola Police Department and $2,000 apiece to the Tannery Arts Center, Soquel Elementry School and Home & School Club.

At 6 p.m., shoppers flocked into the 98,000 square foot store and stared like kids inside a candy shop. The Capitola store is a bit smaller than average-size Target, but according to Custodio it doesn’t mean they won't carry the same amount of items for sale.

There were tables with snacks inside for guests to munch on while they shopped or simply walked around to satisfy their curiosity of the store's layout.

Kate M. is a cosmetologist from Santa Cruz and she was happy to finally have a Target near by without having to make a long trip for her business purchases.

“I’m excited because CVS has a really high mark up and previous to Target being here I had to go all the way to the Target in Watsonville, make a list and make sure I didn’t forget anything,” she said.

Mayor Termini was ecstatic about the unexpected help from Target as well as the amount of people that turned out to Tuesday’s opening.

“I have never seen a more exciting opening,” said Mayor Termini. “Target has built a brand that’s so strong that just the mention of it opening somewhere, people get excited.”
