A flash mob, a sandwich eating contest and a pet adoption event might seem like quirky ways to celebrate turning 40, but for Erik’s DeliCafé, they make perfect sense.

The company is celebrating its 40th Anniversary by donating 50 percent of the net proceeds from three of its Santa Cruz area locations to three local nonprofits on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Each day of the three-day tour will feature a fun event at a different DeliCafe, as the locations serve up “Sandwiches With Character” and make generous donations to regional causes.

Monday
Location: 1475 41st Ave, Capitola, CA 95010
Benefitting Organization: Santa Cruz SPCA
Event: The SPCA will hold adoption event from 11am – 5pm outside the store

Tuesday
Location: 222 Mt Hermon Rd, Scotts Valley, CA 95066 (the first Erik's DeliCafe opened in Scotts Valley in on Sept. 17, 1973)
Benefitting Organization: Friends of Santa Cruz State Parks
Event: Birthday cake, memorabilia, a Mountain Bikers vs. Surfers “Sandwiches With Character Eating Contest” at noon and the announcement of the company’s 40 Years of Erik’s Sweepstakes winner

Wednesday
Location: 155 Walnut Ave, Santa Cruz, CA 95060
Benefitting Organization: Boys & Girls Club of Santa Cruz
Event: Santa Cruz Vice Mayor Lynn Robinson will give a proclamation outside City Hall at 3 p.m. to commemorate Erik’s DeliCafe’s 40th Anniversary. Then there will be a flash mob by the Boys & Girls Club, and a time capsule will be created and sealed at the downtown Santa Cruz DeliCafé.

“As we look back over the last four decades of serving the Santa Cruz community, we should also look forward,” Erik’s DeliCafé founder Erik Johnson said in a prepared statement. “We’ve helped feed people after the ’89 Loma Prieta Earthquake, we’ve invested in starter funds for fallen police officers’ families—but we’ve also been involved in triumphs of this area. In working with these organizations in our Give Back Tour: the Boys & Girls Club, the SPCA and the Friends of the Santa Cruz State Parks, it underlines our investment in our home town and what doing business here really means to us.”
