Capitola-Based Market Spreads Its Roots

Twenty-eight years after Scott Roseman first opened the doors to his market in Capitola, he has seen New Leaf Community Markets become a real growing concern — pun intended.

Roseman and co-owner Rex Stewart opened the eighth store in the New Leaf chain on May 15 with pomp and circumstance in the Vintage Hills Shopping Center in Pleasanton. In addition to sites in Santa Cruz County and Pleasanton, there are also New Leaf Community Markets in Half Moon Bay and San Jose's Evergreen neighborhood.

The chain promises a large array of fresh, locally grown, organic produce, as well as natural and organic meats and sustainable seafood. Many popular features from New Leaf’s other stores have been incorporated into the new 19,000 square foot store, such as a deli, fresh salad bar, antipasti bar, hot bar, juice bar, sushi, gourmet cheeses, and local wines.

“We are very excited that opening day is finally here,” Roseman said. “We have been looking forward to being a part of this great community for many months.” Pleasanton Councilwoman Chery Cook-Kallio remarked, “I am delighted to see this community-minded, neighborhood market locate in Pleasanton. New Leaf Community Markets has an emphasis on organics and sustainability. It is an excellent fit for the center and the nearby neighborhoods.”
